Letter from the Editor: Our Inaugural Issue

Sometimes, things go exactly to plan. Other times, you get surprised.

For example, sometimes, you have plans to launch the first run of your first tiny publishing project. And sometimes, right before you’re about to press the Publish button, your wife tells you that your baby is on their way, and the time that you thought you had to squeeze off the publication before your free time is monopolized by a tiny human just—poof!—vanishes.

So, anyways, surprises! Which has been a continuous part of this process. As a brand-new project, ivy. has suprised me in hundreds of ways. From the incredible quality of the works submitted, to the little notes of support and well-wishes, to the fact that anybody decided to entrust us with their work at all… Surprises are wonderful.

I am so, so excited for you to read the first, inaugural run of ivy. We’ve selected five stories of positive, speculative fiction that, honestly, I’m blown away by. There are twists, cleverness, and other little turns; each is amazingly inventive and inspired. Each dares to dream of a different future, one that maybe we’ll be fortunate to reach.

I hope you’ll be surprised by what you read. I know I was.

Cheers!

Ian VanDuzer is the Editor-in-Chief of ivy. literary magazine. If you don’t know what that is, how on earth are you reading this? He is dedicating this inaugural run to his brand-new daughter, who I’m sure would apologize for delaying the issue if she wasn’t so committed being so darn wonderful.
